ATHENS, Ohio — The Athens County Commission has named an interim clerk of courts after the Tuesday death of Tina Willis.

Candy Russell was selected during a special meeting of the commission Thursday morning, according to the commissioners’ office.

Russell has worked in the clerk’s office for more than a decade, most recently serving as deputy chief clerk of courts.

The commission’s appointment is temporary. The Athens County Democratic Central Committee is tasked with naming a clerk to finish out the term, which ends in 2020.

Russell takes over for Willis, who died Tuesday.

Willis was named to the position last year after Ann Trout retired. She had previously served in the clerk of courts’ office for a total of 18 years and also spent time as the fiscal officer for Dover Township.

Athens County Common Pleas Court Judge George McCarthy and others honored the life of Willis on the judge’s Facebook page Wednesday.
