Athens Co. Expanding COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County will have more COVID-19 vaccine providers next week as the state’s eligibility for the shots expands

Kroger Pharmacies in the county, along with Shrivers Pharmacies and Hopewell Health Centers in Athens and Nelsonville will be offering limited amounts of vaccine to people in Phase 1B, which includes highest priority people 65 and older (80+).

The Athens City-County Health Department and OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital are combining efforts to provide vaccine clinics to members of the community in Phase 1B at the Ohio University Heritage College of Medicine building on Ohio University’s Athens Campus.

Initial efforts, county wide, will be focused on those 80 years of age and older.

Those age 80 and older are able to sign up to get the vaccine starting next week, according to Gov. Mike DeWine. But he said during his press conference yesterday the actual shot in the arm may not come for some time.

“We don’t have enough (vaccines),” he said. “We hope it will increase as we move forward. But like all states, we have to deal with the scarcity.”

The Athens City-County Health Department notes that if you are considering receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, it is important to know that wherever you receive your first dose, you will need to return to the same location to receive your second dose.

If you have registered with the health department for a vaccine and choose to be vaccinated by a different provider, they ask that you call them so they can remove you from their list.

Individuals invited to get vaccinated with the health department will receive an automated message with instruction for scheduling an appointment.

If you are interested in scheduling an appointment at one of the COVID-19 vaccine locations other than the combined OhioHealth/Health Department clinic, please call and speak to a representative at that location for details about how to receive the vaccine.
