The Tigers opened the scoring with a Wade Futhey touchdown pass to Will Futhey giving them a 7-0 lead. But the Trojans and their potent rushing attack led by quarterback Drew Roe and running back Beau Hammond led Portsmouth down the field and Amare Johnson took the jet sweep in for a TD to tie the game at 7.
After another set of touchdowns for both teams, the game was tied at 14. With 15 seconds left in the 2nd quarter, Drew Roe ran in a TD to give the Trojans the 21-14 halftime lead.
Waverly came out strong in the second half and scored two touchdowns giving the Tigers a 27-21 lead. But Portsmouth would not go down without a fight as they quickly tied the game back up at 27.
With the momentum on their side, the Trojans defense was able to get a stop and then Donavan Carr caught a 60-yard TD to give Portsmouth a 34-27 lead with under two minutes to play.
The Tigers did not give up. QB Wade Futhey led the Tigers down the field, and with 45 seconds left, Futhey capped off his five-TD day by finding Penn Morrison in the end zone. Pending the point-after, the Tigers found themselves down by just one.
Instead of kicking the extra point, the Tigers made a gamble — they went for two and put the game on the line. It was Wyatt Crabtree who scored the two point-conversion and gave the Tigers the 35-34 lead.
Drew Roe tried leading the Trojans down the field, but their last second effort was stopped by a Penn Morrison interception, and the Tigers had sealed another victory.
