Eastern nabs first win of the year over Southern
< < Back toREEDSVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) – Electric Eastern Eagles finally strike. Eastern boys basketball wins their first game in just under two years against Southern 54-40.
Before the game both teams celebrated Eastern freshman Braylen Johnson who just rang the bell and defeated cancer. Eastern honored Braylen and his fight by giving him his own letterman along with his first letter.
On this special night the Eagles had an extremely balanced attack on the offensive end with Bryce Newland with 10 points, Trey Hill chipping in with 14, Gavin Murphy with 11, and Jace Bullington with 11.
Both Murphy and Newland also had double doubles. Murphy grabbed a huge 12 rebounds and Newland with 11 steals.
The game was held in check until the fourth by Southern playas Lincoln Rose, Cade Anderson and Aiden Hill who combined 22 of Southerns 40.
When asked what the win meant Hill states “Everything. We’ve been grinding for two years ever since we got on varsity. We’ve been working for this and it’s finally happened.” “We come to practice everyday, we work our butts off and we’ve just been waiting for the day to come to finally get a dub and it’s against our rivals so it’s even better.” Bullington states.
It’s a really good feeling for the boys to get the monkey off their back. With the atmosphere tonight it was almost story book with how smaller communities come together. There’s not a divide. You can see people coming from all around to support Braylen. I’ll remember this one for a long time.” Coach David Knight states.
Eastern hope to continue on the right foot as they travel to Wellston on Tuesday to take on the golden rockets.
