Three Seniors lead Alexander past Wellston on Senior Night
< < Back toALBANY, Ohio (WOUB) – It was a senior night that Marlee Grinstead, Kara Meeks and Olivia Ohms will remember for a while.
The three seniors for Alexander (10-7, 8-1 TVC-Ohio) each scored 16 points as the Lady Spartans took down Wellston (4-12, 0-8) in The Alley, 62-22.
“I’ve been coaching those kids since they were in third and fourth grade,” Alexander head coach Jeff Grinstead said. “This group of seniors mean a lot to me. It was kind of emotional towards the end but we got through it.”
Alexander only led by seven points following the opening quarter but the second quarter was decisive for the Lady Spartans. They held Wellston to just a single point, which was a made free throw midway through the quarter.
Alexander outscored the Golden Rockets, 20-1, in the second quarter to head to the locker room up 35-9.
“It’s kind of a combination of things,” Grinstead said of the Lady Spartans’ defense in the second quarter. “I thought we finally started playing with a little more emotion (in the second quarter) and playing a little bit harder. Marlee really gets up on their point guard and hounds her and does a good job on her. It was a really physical game.”
The Lady Spartans held the Golden Rockets to 13 points in just the second half. Madison Potts scored all of Wellston’s points in the second half. Potts led the Golden Rockets in scoring.
Alexander shot a solid 45 percent from the field, hitting 25 of its 56 attempts. The Lady Spartans also drained nine three pointers in the ballgame, three of which were made by Marlee Grinstead.
The Lady Spartans set to take the court again on Saturday, Feb. 5 against TVC-Ohio foe Meigs. Alexander has just a few games left ahead of the playoffs.
“I think we just got to stay the course,” Grinstead said. “I think the stuff that we’re doing is working and we just got to continue with the little things.”
