Born in Indianapolis, James grew up in a vibrant Jazz community that included noted artists such as trombonists JJ Johnson/Slide Hampton/David Baker, the Montgomery brothers (Wes, Buddy and Monk), tenor saxophonist David Young, bassist Larry Ridley, trumpeters Virgil Jones and Freddie Hubbard.

After a sojourn in Chicago James moved to New York where his almost ubiquitous presence on 30 Bluenote recordings, and a member of groups led by Freddie Hubbard, Max Roach, Randy Weston, the Ellington Orchestra under Mercer Ellington. For 12 years James was a member of David Murray’s Octet and Big Band.

As a leader, James Spaulding managed to record a succession of well received records in which his fiery alto stylings embrace and extend the legacy of hard bop.
