New Staff for Early Childhood

We are very excited to have an Early Childhood/Elementary Specialist back on the team. Lisa Kinnard joined us at the beginning of August bringing a wealth of early childhood experience to our team. She is already coming up with great ideas to support our Early Learning Professionals and families with young children. She will be heading up our Ohio Ready to Learn Workshop series as well as working with our Ohio Learns 360 grant projects. You can reach Lisa here.

Ohio Learns 360 Grant Begins

This summer all eight Ohio PBS stations received a grant from the Ohio Department of Education to provide enrichment opportunities for students and families across our region. Grant activities are getting underway very soon. In each newsletter we will share information about upcoming events.

Our Ohio High School Documentary Film Festival

In May we completed our second High School Film festival. You can check out last year’s winners here. We are getting ready to kick off year three for this project. Participating schools will receive on going lessons to teach the art of documentary film making. We have cameras, lights and tripods to loan as well as computers to help with editing. Some schools will have a mentor assigned to them to support the young filmakers as they create their projects. If you are interested in participating or you have students who wish to submit videos for the festival, contact us.

PBS Kids Talk About …………..

PBS KIDS is expanding on the interest and impact of “PBS KIDS Talk about Race and Racism,” (a digital program created in 2020) by adding videos on PBS LearningMedia that address topics important to young learners. Early episodes have great support materials to go along with each topic. Topics created include, Friendship and Perseverance New topics will appear weekly and additional support materials will be added to each topic as they are developed. These are excellent resources for Social Emotional Learning.

Lending Library is Open!

As we hopefully transition to a more normal school year, we want to remind you of the items we have for loan. We would love to see these items out in the schools being used once again. We do not have a formal delivery or shipping system, but we will work with you to figure out how to get the items to you.

After School 360 Read Alongs

These Read Alongs are part of the Ohio Learns 360 grant project. These will be fun after school activities for families. Each session will feature a book, a PBS KIDS episode and an activity that families can create together.
The first one is Sept 6th at 4:00 p.m. The event will feature a virtual screening of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. After the screening, there will be an activity for families to do together. For this event, families will be drawing feelings. You will need:
-1 sheet of paper
-Colored pencils, crayons, or markers
-Paper plate
-Glue or glue stick

PBS Kids for Parents

PBS LearningMedia

PBS KIDS for Parents and PBS LearningMedia each have collections of resources to support families and teachers as the new school year starts. The new PBS KIDS for Parents Hub has activities and articles to help children prepare to go to back to school. Topics include coping with anxieties and emotions, creating daily routines, and tackling common situations that arise with the start of school. Ease the transition with some fun lunch box notes or after school snacks and downtime activities. The collection from PBS LearningMedia features activities and video resources to help students get to know each other and their new school routines, as well as lesson plans to help teachers get new classes off to a great start. We especially like the back to school games section.

Camp In A Box

This is another exciting part of our Ohio Learns 360 Project. Very soon we will have kits for after school and summer programs. Each kit will contain curriculum and all the materials needed to deliver a week’s worth of activities for 20 participants. We will be training teachers on how to use the kits then delivering the materials to each program. There will be a K-2 and a 3-5 focused kit developed about every quarter. While we are waiting for the materials to arrive, we are looking for programs that are interested in the training. If you are interested or want more information contact woublearninglab@woub.org and get you on our list so that we can begin training as soon as the materials arrive.
