NEW CONCORD, Ohio (WOUB) — The Fort Frye Cadets started their 2022 season traveling to New Concord to face the John Glenn Muskies in a division six versus division three matchup. For both teams on the field on Friday night, the expectations looked to be very high.

For the Cadets however, they quickly turned their expectations into reality as Fort Frye rolled through to a hard-fought victory, giving them a huge points advantage to start off the season in the division.

Many offensive factors for the Cadets played to their advantage as they controlled both the run game and pass game on Friday. After a slow start in the 1st quarter only leading to a short touchdown run by John Glenn’s sophomore running back Lincoln Gilcher, the Cadets started to light up the field nearing the end of the half.

Clayton Miller, making his first start as quarterback, threw a 48-yard touchdown to Braxton Brown giving the Cadets the lead 11-6 at halftime to start up their offense.

Braxton Brown made his point in New Concord Friday as he would put decent numbers on both sides of the ball. On offense, Braxton would have 57 yards and the one TD. On the defense side, he would also grab two interceptions to go along with his remarkable first game.

“All around, it was just good week for us on defense and it went well,” Braxton stated.

Clayton Miller’s first start was also notable for the Cadets as he would pass for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Other noteworthy players for the Cadets include Austin Powell getting two touchdowns, Keegan Strode grabbing an interception, and running back Owen Brown leading a 79-yard kickoff return touchdown to give Fort Frye their victory on the road in their first game 33-6.

For head coach Eric Huck, the performance his players lead on Friday night was remarkable to start off the season.

“I thought they played pretty well and played with a lot of heart,” he said. “We did make some mistakes early and had a couple botched snaps, some early penalties, but I was real pleased with the way they responded to it and played really well in the 2nd half.”

The Fort Frye Cadets will once again travel on the road on August 27 to take on the Bellaire Big Reds in a Division VI Region 23 matchup which should have implications for playoffs in the fall. Meanwhile, the Muskies will also travel on the road on August 26 to take on Bloom-Carrol.
