43 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Athens County for Sept. 30- Oct. 6

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 18,531 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 43 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Oct. 6, 2022.

According to ODH data, the cases involved nine people 20-29, seven people 0-19, six people 50-59, six people 70-79, five people 60-69, four people 30-39, four people 80+ and two people 40-49.

One previously confirmed case required hospitalization for a person in their 60s. According to the data, 378 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 236 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 18,143 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 53.53% of the county has started the vaccination process and 49.85% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 18,465 first boosters and 5,885 second boosters and 2,835 updated boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 9,997 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 369 hospitalizations, 27 ICU admissions and 94 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
