Dani Kington, co-founder, and co-director of the Athens County Independent, discusses with Conversations from Studio B host Tom Hodson the concept of local non-profit news.

The Athens County Independent is newly created to provide in-depth reporting of local issues. The news is free and is currently provided online and through a newsletter.

It has been formed by Corrine Colbert and Kington, both former employees of the Athens News and the Athens Messenger.

One of the first controversies covered by the Independent has been controversies at Hocking College.

The Independent has written two stories: one outlining the troubled administration of President Betty Young and the second detailing unsuccessful efforts to replace three members of the Board of Trustees.

The nine-member board has responsibilities for hiring and firing the president and for the fiscal wellbeing of the institution.

A new story is forthcoming examining data about enrollment and faculty size.

Currently you can find the Independent at https://athensindependent.com.

It also is available on Facebook at Athens County Independent and on Twitter at

@AthensIndy.
