Ohio Ready to Learn

Workshop Series Begins Jan 20th

We are ready to launch this year’s series of workshops for early childhood providers. This year we are offering a mix of virtual and in person workshops. Virtual attendees will receive workshop materials and books in the mail after workshop completion. In-person participants will have the opportunity to network with other providers, create materials for your program, and receive books and other materials to support the topics from the workshop. Participants who attend three of WOUB’s sessions will be entered into a drawing for one of 10 Kindle Fire Tablets preloaded with PBS Kids games and apps.

As always, a new month brings a new calendar of fun. January’s weekly calendar topics are: Light & Shadows, Healthy Me, Celebrating Winter, Creative Problem Solving, and Working Together. There are links to activity packets for each topic as well as daily games and challenges to go along with episodes from PBS Kids shows

Media Literacy Academy

Courses Begin!

We are all set for PBS Media Literacy Academy. If you haven’t signed up, you still can. The courses are open to all Ohio educators including PreK-12 classroom teachers, librarians, TOSAs and anyone who wants to make media-rich, digitally-savvy learning available to students.

The Academy will give you the skills and experience you need to connect the dots between digital citizenship, media literacy, 21st Century skills and national curriculum standards while completing the requirements for the PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification.

Courses are asynchronous and there are multiple options for credits.

This curated resource collection explores the science behind the seasons. It includes the Changing Season’s – Winter collection for young learners as well as collections for older students looking at how animals adapt to survive winter. The Why Seasons Make No Sense collection looks at why we divide the year into four seasons.

Looking for activities to do now that the weather is colder that lets kids blow off steam and doesn’t involve jumping off couches? Luckily, the PBS KIDS winter line-up offers fresh ideas to create our own winter wonderland — with or without snow. Whether you choose to get outside or keep cozy inside, there are plenty of ways to enjoy family time in the winter.

City Island

Digital Shorts

This new digital shorts series of 3 minute videos supports civics education for grades K-2. City Island is a living city where the objects are people. In the town of City Island, everything is alive! Every object is a fun character with a name, voice, and distinctive personality. There are no people, the city itself is the populace. In addition to civics, the series touches on other related aspects of the Social Studies framework, such as geography and economics. The PBS Learning Media City Island collection contains resources to help students watch with a purpose and learn more about cities and civic responsibilities.

Being Confident on Stage:

Preparing Your Kids for a Performance

Performing in front of an audience is a great opportunity for children to share what they’ve been learning. But for some, it can feel scary. Maybe they’re afraid of making a mistake or nervous about many people watching them. Instead of letting their fears take over, you can encourage your child to try their best, build their confidence, and see what they can accomplish.
