A back-and-forth 1st quarter began the game with the Vikings taking advantage of their size early. Ashton Allman used his rebounding and finishing skills to help Vinton County gain an early lead. But the Buckeyes would not back down that easily with Trenton Morrissey having two huge buckets to help Nelsonville-York to only be down 13-11 to end the 1st quarter.
The 2nd quarter was no snooze fest either with each team going at each other. The Vikings would jump out to a lead early with Garrett Brown and Cobra Sharp capitalizing off Nelsonville-York’s miscues. The lead would ultimately be chipped away at by the Buckeyes with Keagan Swope finishing under the rim & dishing out assists to cut the lead to 30-24 going into the half.
After being down by 6 going into the half the Buckeyes would come out hot to begin the 3rd quarter. Vinton County would maintain their lead with a huge 3 from Matt Hembree and their defense coming up with huge stops late in the 3rd. Nelsonville-York would still find themselves down 38-32 after the 3rd quarter with the Vikings defense of pressure.
Any hope of a comeback for the Buckeyes would be erased in the 4th quarter with Vinton County pulling away to end the game. Brown finished his 16-point performance nailing clutch free throws to end the game. The Vikings’ full court press also sealed the deal with Nelsonville-York unable to get the ball up the court. Vinton County would come away with a huge victory, 55-44, catapulting themselves into the driver seat of the TVC-Ohio.
The Vikings would ultimately be too much for the Buckeyes with their defense coming up huge creating turnover after turnover and taking advantage of Nelsonville-York’s mistakes. Vinton County will head to Athens on Tuesday to take on the Bulldogs next in another key TVC-Ohio game to control their title hopes. Nelsonville-York will host the Wellston Rockets on Tuesday in hopes to bounce back from tonight’s loss.
