ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Ohio University commemorated Juneteenth with a Black history Tour and a festival.

A diverse group of community members gathered Saturday at the Baker University Center, eager to explore the rich tapestry of Athens’ Black history.

Led by Dr. Tee Ford-Ahmed, communication director of the Mount Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society, the walking tour highlighted local landmarks tied to the struggles, triumphs, and cultural heritage of the Black community in the region.

Later in the day, the Juneteenth Festival brought live music, food and vendors to College Green for a celebration.

Juneteenth was named a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed legislation that added it to the government holiday calendar.

The day commemorates when the news of emancipation finally reached people in Galveston, Texas in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed.
