Athens County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on Whites Road in Nelsonville late Tuesday night and were able to quickly remove the children, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies then used a loudspeaker to tell the adults to come out. Negotiation attempts continued for more than two hours.
Meanwhile, a special response team was called and gas munitions were used to drive two adults out from the home.
Jamie Oakes, 46, was arrested and charged with inducing panic and having a weapon while under a disability — he was allegedly intoxicated when the shot was fired. He appeared in court Wednesday morning and bond was set at $75,000.
“This suspect showed a disturbing disregard for the care of all parties in the residence,” said Sheriff Rodney Smith. “This is a clear demonstration of the importance of advanced training and the cohesiveness between our special operations and patrol personnel.”
