The first set started hot with fierce hits from Wellston. Nelsonville-York looked shaky in the beginning, but it only lasted a couple possessions. The Buckeyes kicked it into gear with some great offensive plays on their side of the net. Buckeyes’ Chloe Lehman had some key kills on the outside for Nelsonville to keep them in the lead. Nelsonville took the first set 25-12.
The Buckeyes looked strong in the second set, Lyndsey Spencer was a big leader on the court with amazing digs to keep volley’s going. Golden Rocket Hannah Potts tried to unnerve Nelsonville-York’s front line, but the Buckeyes stayed calm. Mid-set, Lyndsey Spencer met a huge milestone in her volleyball career, as she reached 1,000 career digs.
“I am so proud of Lyndsey,” said Buckeyes’ head coach Wayne Dicken. “Lyndsey and Chloe are the leaders of our team and they are really earning the respect of the younger girls and mentoring them.”
The set resumed after team excitement and cheers from the Buckeye student section for Spencer. Nelsonville-York took the second set 25-12.
Going into the last set the Wellston Golden Rockets needed to step up their defensive play if they wanted to stay with Nelsonville-York. Both teams rallied with a couple missed serves and hits on both sides. Wellston’s Karly Rinehart caused trouble in the front row, causing the Buckeyes front row to work harder. Rinehart scored five kills on the night. Nelsonville-York piled on the points, and ended the set 25-7.
“I am comfortable with anyone on our roster to take the floor for us,” said Coach Dicken. “We are a very deep team and the girls are very capable of preforming.”
On Thursday the Buckeyes match-up against the River Valley Raiders, and the Golden Rockets take on the Marauders at home as the second round of conference play draws to an end.
