ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – This Sunday counterculture icon Jorma Kaukonen and guitar hero John Hurlbut will guest DJ as a part of WOUB-FM’s Audiosyncracies program, airing live on 91.3 FM 8 p.m. through midnight.

How did this come to be?

Well, hardworking people make the world go round, and longtime WOUB volunteer Doug Brooks most certainly qualifies as a hard worker.

And, in this case, when we say “longtime,” we really mean it.

Brooks has been volunteering for WOUB for 19 years, starting out as an addition to WOUB AM’s weekly volunteer radio program Radio Free Athens. Sometime between then and now Brooks started doing a whole lot more than just filling a Radio Free Athens shift every few weeks. He handles the volunteer scheduling for the program, and he’s trained dozens of budding DJs. Additionally, Brooks has guest hosted Audiosyncracies several times over the past year.

One must ask if one wishes to receive; and this held true when Brooks took the initiative to book Kaukonen and Hurlbut himself to join him when he guest hosts Audiosyncracies for the eighth time Sunday.

Brooks says that booking Kaukonen and Hurlbut to guest host the program alongside himself just made sense. He noted that there is no set schedule for the program, and that’s probably a good thing.

“It’s the Sunday before Christmas, so I might ask them to play their favorite Christmas music,” he said. “Really, I just want them to play whatever they would like to. Maybe we’ll find out Jorma is a fan of The Cure, who knows?”
