TVC-Hocking Boys Standings
T-1 – Belpre Golden Eagles | 4-2 (Conf. 2-0)
Belpre is off and running in 2023 with an impressive showing to begin the season. The Golden Eagles earned their first conference win of the season over Eastern 67-42. They have also knocked off two TVC-Ohio teams in Athens and Alexander.
Belpre got its best win of the early portion of the year over the defending TVC-Hocking champions Federal Hocking Friday night at home. The Golden Eagles will take on Fort Frye in the first of three non-conference games before the new year Tuesday and face Southern on Friday in Racine. — Andrew Bowlby
T-1 – Trimble Tomcats | 3-1 (Conf. 2-0)
The Trimble Boys had two intense games this past week. For the first, the Eastern Eagles traveled to Glouster for their first Tomcat tango of the season. Trimble won 81-52, making them 2-0 in the TVC-Hocking.
Their first conference game, and victory, was over Southern last week. The Tomcats also made a quick visit to Nelsonville-York to cap their week off. The Buckeyes ended Trimble’s three-game win streak and took the victory, 61-54.
The Tomcats now look to bounce back against Paint Valley when the two play this Friday in Glouster. — Hailey Hollinger
T-3 – Federal Hocking Lancers | 3-1 (Conf. 1-1)
The boys team out of Federal Hocking only had one game this past week, which did not go to plan. The Lancers dropped their contest against Belpre by a final score of 60-57.
The one-two punch of Tariq Cottrill and Andrew Airhart have been the standout leaders for the Lancers so far this season. Having only four seniors on the roster and graduating four last year have forced Federal Hocking underclassmen to step up in huge ways. Sophomores Cameron Joy and Mosiah Cottrill have been playing huge roles.
Federal Hocking will look to bounce back this upcoming week, with three games to be played. First at home against Marietta on Tuesday, away to Eastern on Friday and then wrapping it up with the Clash at the Coliseum on Saturday. — Gavin Carrig
T-3 – Waterford Wildcats | 2-2 (Conf. 1-1)
It has been a tough campaign for the Waterford boys, but the Wildcats have demonstrated that iron sharpens iron.
While dealing with injuries out of the gate, Waterford earned their first victory over the Crooksville Ceramics, limiting them to 35 points on the night in a 48-35 victory. That performance ties the fewest points allowed last year, and then, only a week later, the Wildcats allowed a minuscule 30 points to the Southern Tornadoes in a 57-30 rout.
Despite encountering several bumps in the road with their losses to Federal Hocking and Meigs, this year’s Waterford boys’ team has proven they are improving in their second year under Coach D.J. Cunningham.
That stout unit will be tested this week against Coach Howie Caldwell and the Trimble Tomcats as the Wildcats look to get over .500. — Charlie Ihlenfeld
T-5 – Southern Tornadoes | 2-2 (Conf. 0-2)
Southern has split the first four games of the season with two non-conference wins and two TVC-Hocking losses. The Tornadoes were able to sneak by TVC-Ohio opponent Wellston 55-51 and knock off Clay 49-41.
However, the Tornadoes have struggled in the first two conference matchups. Southern lost to Trimble and Waterford by a combined 51 points. There will be no break for Southern as they face the tough challenge of facing Belpre on Friday. — Andrew Bowlby
T-5 – Eastern Eagles | 0-6 (Conf. 0-2)
The boys in Reedsville have had a rough start to the season. With only one senior in the starting lineup, the Eagles are a very young team and yet to win.
This past week the Eagles faced off on Tuesday against the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes. The Buckeyes won this game by only six points 70-64. The second game of this week was not kind at all to the Eagles. The boys travelled to Trimble, and they were met with a 29-point loss as the Tomcats won 81-52.
If the Eagles want to debut in the win column, they must limit their opponents scoring. The Eagles opponents are averaging 67 points. Eastern must make some changes defensively if they want to climb the standings next week. — Stephen Koroly
TVC-Hocking Girls Standings
T-1 – Waterford Wildcats | 5-0 (Conf. 3-0)
The Waterford girls’ team has been rolling through the early portion of their schedule, winning each of their first five matches. Waterford’s closest game of the season was a 15-point rout of the Linsly Cadets on the road.
This girls’ squad has somehow seen their stars reach an even higher level of excellence this season. Kendall Sury and Avery Wagner have been on a tear against their TVC-Hocking competition, dispatching each of their conference rivals by at least 20 points.
Their competition is about to become a lot fiercer with the Federal Hocking Lancers coming to the Cooper on Thursday. The match projects to be a battle that will define the course of the conference this year. — Charlie Ihlenfeld
T-1- Belpre Golden Eagles | 4-1 (Conf. 3-0)
The Belpre girls are off to a strong start sitting at the top of the TVC-Hocking just a few weeks into the season. The Lady Golden Eagles have already collected three wins over TVC-Hocking opponents. They have taken down Federal Hocking, Trimble and Eastern.
The lone loss for Belpre came against Williamstown on the road. The Golden Eagles will host Morgan on Monday and face Southern on the road Thursday. — Andrew Bowlby
3 – Federal Hocking Lancers | 5-1 (Conf. 2-1)
The Federal Hocking Lady Lancers ended the week riding a four-game win streak, picking up victories this week against Morgan 49-32 and against Southern 57-33. The girls have limited upperclassmen on the roster, only two seniors in Kyndal Snedden and Ava Tolson.
Having this situation, there have been plenty of underclassmen run the floor. Freshman Brenlee Cottrill and McKayla Nelson, along with junior Jaylee Orsborne, have all stepped up into those roles, whether that be from out on the wings, down low in the paint or from behind the arc.
The Lancers have some huge games coming up this week. They will visit Warren on Monday and then will continue their road streak with a massive TVC-Hocking game against the Waterford Wildcats on Thursday. The Lancers will then compete in the Clash at the Coliseum on Dec. 23. — Gavin Carrig
4- Trimble Tomcats | 2-4 (Conf. 1-2)
The Trimble Lady Tomcats had a jampacked week. They played one conference game and two non-conference games.
The Tomcats traveled out of the conference first. The Cats’ squad is young, but that didn’t stop sophomore McKenzie Eing from putting up 14 points against the Lakewood Lancers. However, Trimble found themselves in an inescapable scoring deficit, and Lakewood won 47-30.
The Tomcats played at Waterford later in the week for their second conference game of the year. The battle of the cats ended in Waterford’s favor, with the Wildcats winning 54-22. Trimble hoped on a bus for the third time in a week, but this time, it was for a much shorter trip to Nelsonville-York. The Buckeyes handed the Lady Tomcats their fourth loss in a row, winning 65-36.
This upcoming week, the ladies will regroup in hopes of ending their losing streak and getting a win. They’ll play Miller and Eastern before the start of the new year. — Hailey Hollinger
T-5- Southern Tornadoes | 2-5 (Conf. 0-3)
It has been a difficult season so far for the Lady Tornadoes with just two wins in their first seven games. In the first victory, Southern defeated Clay while giving up the fewest points in a game this season 50-24. They also took down Beallsville 40-28 on Saturday in Racine.
Conference play has not treated Southern well as they have dropped all three TVC-Hocking contests. While the Tornadoes kept it close with Trimble losing just 34-30. They were defeated by Waterford and Federal Hocking convincingly.
The Tornadoes will have an opportunity to win their first conference game later in the week as they take on Belpre. — Andrew Bowlby
T-5 – Eastern Eagles | 0-8 (Conf. 0-3)
The Eastern Lady Eagles and first-year head coach Jim Simpson are looking for their first win of the season after eight games. The lady Eagles defeated season so far can be explained by the youth of this squad.
Eight out of eleven players on this roster are Freshman and the lone senior on this roster is Hope Reed. The Eastern girls faced off two times this past week. Ritchie County defeated the Eagles 64-46. They also dropped a game this past Thursday against Belpre with a final score of 63-31.
The lady Eagles must mature throughout the season if they want any hope of success this season. — Stephen Koroly
