ATHENS, OH – Sports have always been central in Maria Monesi’s life. The senior journalism news and information major is now ready to take what she has learned about sports journalism at Ohio University and WOUB and make it central to her career.

“I grew up watching football every Sunday and always thought it would be cool to work for a team one day,” she says, “By attending Ohio University and getting involved at WOUB, I’ve been able to cover numerous sporting events which have allowed me to gain valuable experience. I’m hoping to find a job in sports broadcasting covering local sports for local television stations or with a professional sports team.”

Monesi grew up in Columbus and chose Ohio University because of the strong reputation of its journalism school. She says she felt at home the minute she stepped on campus. Monesi joined WOUB in September of 2021 after attending the WOUB Information Meeting at the start of her sophomore year.

“I’ve grown so much during my time at WOUB, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities I’ve had,” she reminisced. “The best part about my experience has been the people and the support I’ve received along the way.”

During her time at WOUB, Monesi has worked as the producer of the Bobcat Showcase, lead reporter for Gridiron Glory and Hardwood Heroes, and has been involved with NewsWatch. She also took part in the WOUB Internship Program during the Summer of 2022 and participated in the WOUB Job Connection Program interviewing with media recruiters on campus for full-time jobs and internships.

“The interviews were helpful because I got to make connections with those in the industry while also getting feedback to help me improve as a journalist,” she said.

Monesi is a Cleveland Browns fan and enjoys attending and watching games, but she has other interests. She also enjoys hanging out with friends and shopping.
