Big second period lifts Ohio past Drexel for senior night victory
< < Back toATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – A four-goal second period propelled Ohio to a 6-1 senior night victory over Drexel.
Ohio honored five seniors in front of a packed crowd in Bird Arena before the game kicked off on Saturday night.
“The seniors and fifth years have put in so much work to this program,” head coach Lionel Mauron said. “It’s a happy ending here at home before we gear up for nationals.”
Andrew Wells, a fifth-year forward for Ohio, talks about what the night meant for him.
“I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” Wells said. “My last game at Bird (Arena), it’s how I started here four or five years ago. To end that way, to end with a win like that just end our regular season on a high note I couldn’t be happier.”
The first period was a lot of back and forth play, and neither team was able to find the back of the net.
“I think the first period’s hard,” Mauron said. “There’s all the stuff going on off the ice and you leave a lot of energy there. I think in the second we actually started playing and it was much better.”
The Bobcats then got rolling. Laker Aldridge kicked off the scoring for his first of two goals in the second period. The Bobcats concluded the second with a 4-1 lead.
Ohio continued to dominate in the third period. Spencer Schons extended its lead with a goal of his own, and not even 30 seconds later Wells capped off the scoring for the night as Ohio earned the 6-1 victory.
The Bobcats now shift their focus to the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament.
“For us it was more about finishing the regular season on a high note and having a special night for all these players and kind of put that behind us,” Mauron said. “Tonight they’ll go and enjoy themselves and on Monday it’s nationals time.”
The ACHA National Tournament begins on March 7.
