ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — A program to help some residents pay for utilities or air conditioning during the summer is now open to Athens, Hocking and Perry county residents.

HAPCAP’s home energy assistance summer crisis program started last week and will go through Sept. 30.

It provides income-eligible residents up to $500 or $800 to pay electric bills, repair their air conditioning units or purchase a new unit.

Applicants should be at or below 175% of the federal poverty guidelines. That’s up to $54,600 a year for a family of four.

HAPCAP says it has already received around 100 applications.

Public Relations Coordinator Valerie Addis says the program meets a crucial need.

“We see a lot of our neighbors are just facing additional expenses in the summer, particularly if they have children that are usually in school,” Addis said. “This is just one program that can help a little bit with those additional costs.”
