Excursions Jazz Motifs w/ Dr. Art Cromwell – 6 – 9 p.m.
The phrase of Part III’s Jazz Diaspora series “That Spanish Tinge“ comes from pianist Jelly Roll Morton’s description of the rhythms he heard in New Orleans from musicians of Spanish backgrounds. His adaptation of this style to blues forms, is what gave Jazz its original and particular “flavor”, or “tinge”.
Part III emphasizes the Diaspora’s Black Atlantic adaptation and absorption of this root strata in Afro-Cuban, Salsa, and Latin Jazz. Then, tracing the origins back to Spain and the Andalusian region from which Flamenco developed (that has elements of African, Indian, Middle East music itself), we will discover further adaptations in various European large ensemble music of the mid 20th and early 21st. Century.
The Excursion commences, Sat. Aug. 24, 6:06-9:00 pm, EDT as part of Radio Free Athens on WOUB Ohio University.
