Fairfield Union bounces back against Meigs in Week 2 matchup
< < Back toLANCASTER, Ohio (WOUB) — In a Friday night matchup pushed back an hour due to the heat, the Fairfield Union Falcons hosted the Meigs Marauders. The Falcons would secure a 48-6 victory against the Marauders.
Both teams were coming off opposite results from the first week going into this matchup. The Fairfield Union Falcons lost the previous week by a 49-7 margin to New Lexington and looked to avenge the loss. The Meigs Marauders, however, picked up a statement 26-19 win against Galia Academy the week prior and wanted to improve to 2-0.
The Falcons thought they would get on the scoreboard early with an Owen Ruff long touchdown, but it would be called back for a chop block. However, Ruff would eventually get his chance to score but the first drive for Fairfield Union ended in a punt.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the next drive when Grant McPherson blocked a punt that was recovered and taken to the end zone.
Quickly after, Fairfield Union scored again off a Ruff rushing touchdown, putting Meigs in a hole. With the pressure put on the Meigs offense, the Marauders started to drive close to the red zone before facing a crucial 4th and 7.
Unfortunately for the Marauders, the Falcons defense would hold still and force a turnover on the down.
Following that defensive stop, Fairfield Union would once again score, gaining a 20-0 lead against Meigs. With their backs against the wall, Meigs’ offense responded.
Quarterback Gunner Cleveland methodically passed the ball down the field capping the drive off with a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dustin Vance.
The Marauders’ defense then picked up a fumble on the next drive in what looked like the turning point of the game. But when the threat of a momentum shifted, the Falcon’s defense came up big with an interception and another touchdown to end the half 27 to 6.
Meigs, despite the strong effort, could not come back from this halftime deficit. Fairfield Union won 48-6 to bounce back in a huge way.
Meigs will travel to Dawson-Bryant next week before starting conference play, while Fairfield Union will host Fairland before their conference opener against Hamilton Township.
