Athens continues its win streak against Vinton County
< < Back to athens-continues-its-win-streak-against-vinton-countyTHE PLAINS, Ohio (WOUB)– The Vinton County Vikings traveled to Joe Burrow Stadium to take on the Athens Bulldogs and the Bulldogs dominated this game and won 35-7.
However, Athens had a couple of big injuries. Running backs Alex Pero and Weston Wheatley were both out of this game with injuries.
Vinton County received the opening kick, and the suffocating Athens defense forced the first punt of the game.
On the Bulldogs’ opening drive, the offense marched down the field and Anthony Sutton punched the ball into the endzone from a yard out, Athens leads 7-0.
After another stalled out drive, the Bulldogs got the ball back. Sutton continued his night with a 51-yard touchdown run and added to their lead.
Every time the Athens offense touched the ball, they were scoring points. Their next drive, quarterback Braeden Young hit receiver Daniel Heightland in stride for a 63-yard play. On the next play, Young completed his pass to receiver Leo Martin for another touchdown, 21-0.
The Vikings were forced to punt on their next possession, but Athens mishandled the punt and Vinton County recovered the ball. They were once again forced to punt that drive.
Fans in the stands had flashbacks as once again Bulldogs’ Anthony Sutton went for another 51-yard touchdown run and Athens went up 28-0 heading into the locker room.
The Bulldogs started with the ball in the second half, and they took no time getting back into the endzone. It only took two plays for Braeden Young to hit Leo Martin in his route and he put Athens up 35-0 and started a running clock.
The Vikings did put a score on the board, but it was too little, too late. The Bulldogs took this game, 35-7.
Vinton County falls to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play, they host the Alexander Spartans (2-3) at home. Athens keeps their perfect season alive at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference.
They play the Warren Warriors (4-1) at home. Both games are on Friday, September 27th.
