DJ Grumpy Grandma – 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
I’m riding high on a “new favorite band”: “Death By Unga Bunga.”
They’re a Norwegian group my impossibly hip father introduced me to. They check all the boxes: Tim and Eric inspired music videos? Check. Reverence for ’60s garage rock? Check. How about a reverence for Thin Lizzy? Well, they’ve been known to play the main riff from The Boys Are Back In Town – in unison and with their guitars hoisted behind their heads.
How about that band name? It’s a reference to ’80s “budget rockers” The Mummies. I’ve got a lot of cool stuff queued up for my show – as much DBUB as I can legally play plus (as per usual) lots of sound effects from monster movies and probably some Donovan sprinkled in there, too.
Excursions w/ Art Cromwell – 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
“Voice(s) of Jazz Pt.II: Vocalise-to-Voice Art”
Excursions’ second Jazz vocalists program is dedicated to examining the voice as participant and instrument, starting with Bebop’s innovations-scat and improvised lyrics-to contemporary vocal styles.
“From Vocalise-to-Voice Art” will present major innovators of the art form from the decade of the 40s-to the present: Iconic singers, vocal ensembles, the voice as compositional focal point, and avant-garde practitioners – all trace its evolutionary development.
