Shermans march past Pioneers in SVC rivalry
< < Back toChillicothe, Oh (WOUB) – The 7-1 Unioto Shermans took their war plan to 4-3 Zane Trace this Friday, trying to conquer the Pioneers territory and extend their SVC title race lead by another game.
Unioto started the evening with the ball and marched their way down the field on the first drive with a healthy combination of runs and passes. A 20 yard carry that set up a goal line rushing touchdown for Isaac Coy and the Shermans would find themselves up early in the first with a 6-0 lead.
After the score, the Pioneers struggles would only amplify, with a fumble on a short carry helping set Unioto up halfway through Zane Trace territory. The Pioneers fought to make sure this fumble didn’t start a rough night and it worked, as the next play was a snagged interception to flip momentum back in Zane Trace’s direction.
The next frame wasn’t much different than the first, with it being another slow, defensive battle. The Pioneers continued to gain momentum throughout the second, two long drives letting them give their defense a break.
The second of these drives would work better than the first and Zane Trace had their way moving the defense back with a long pass. Silas Stewart then scored the second touchdown of the game on a short run. This would give the Pioneers a one point advantage heading into halftime.
Unioto would respond to all this Zane Trace momentum with a forced turnover of their own just before halftime, a tip drill interception that found its way to a couple of Shermans. However, they wouldn’t be able to make their own momentum as their drive stalled, and the game entered halftime with a 7-6 Zane Trace lead.
The Shermans were able to march their way through Zane Trace with a commanding second half, winning this one 28-14.
