Hawks soar past Bulldogs in thrilling 44-38 shootout

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WOUB) – The Bloom-Carroll Bulldogs (6-1) went on the road to face the Bishop Hartley Hawks (3-4) in a high offensive battle. Bishop Hartley defeated Bloom-Carroll 44-38. 

This game started hot as Robert Lathon scored a 46-yard touchdown within the first three minutes of the game. Matt Galich would take the quarterback power in for the two-point conversion. 

The Bulldogs marched down the field on their opening possession and Thanthanavong would find Rusty Hutchinson for a 4-yard touchdown pass to cut the score deficit against the Hawks 8-7. 

Next play, Bishop Hartley took the ball 80 yards to the house and the two-point conversion was successful once again. Bloom-Carroll kicked a field goal with a huge fourth down stop by the Hawks’ defense. Then, Lathon scored his second touchdown of the game in a beast-mode run from 13 yards out. 

The Bulldogs and Hawks scored two more times before halftime with an 8-yard touchdown pass by Thanthanavong. 45 seconds before halftime, Lathon would score yet again from 5 yards out. Bishop Hartley led at halftime 32-17. 

Straight out of the half, Bloom-Carroll would have a huge kick return to set them up in a great field position. Just a few plays later, they ran play action and connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass. 

The Hawks’s run offense simply was unstoppable as they had another 19-yard touchdown run to put them up 38-24 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. One minute and 30 seconds later, Jude Blair made this shootout a one-score game again with a 51-yard touchdown. 

The Bulldogs’ defense finally stopped the Hawks offense. Bloom-Carroll punched in it from 3 yards out and it was a tie game for the first time since the start of the game. The next drive decided the game for Bishop Hartley. 

The Hawks had a 9-minute drive that led to a 2-yard touchdown by Robert Lathon. They missed the two-point conversion that left the door open for the Bulldogs. Bishop Hartley had not been able to stop Bloom-Carroll all game until the final drive. 

Third and five and the Hawks’s defense sacked Thanthanavong which led to a fourth and 18 from their own 37-yard line. The Bulldog’s pass would fall incomplete as the Hawks took this game. Bishop Hartley would outlast Bloom-Carroll 44-38. 

Robert Lathon had four rushing touchdowns with three of them being in the first half. 

Bishop Hartley will look to finish the season going into playoffs. Bloom-Carroll dropped their second game of the season and will face Hamilton Township next Friday.
