ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – New additions to Athens sewer system are in the design process to help the growth on the city’s west side.

Service Safety Director Andy Stone said the city hopes to replace two lift systems along Columbus Road, and he said the plan is to help prepare for the expansion of Athens’ west side.

“Ultimately, it will just be new infrastructure that will support that region of the city,” Stone said. “We want to have Athens grow and we need to plan infrastructure for it.”

One new lift station will be placed behind the Goodwill on Columbus Road and another down the road by In-Town Body Shop.

Mayor Steve Patterson said the city has already seen a lot of interest in land along Columbus Road.

“It does open up opportunities for further development out in the Columbus Road corridor,” Patterson said.

Stone said the infrastructure will also help the city prepare for population growth.

“We would really love to be a place that businesses and residents who maybe have a connection to not only Athens but maybe connections to central Ohio come and live and work,” Stone said.

Construction has not started, but Assistant City Engineer Gillian Garland hopes work on the project will begin soon.

“We’re hoping to get it sold and bid by the end of this year, if not early next,” Garland said. “And then construction would begin in the upcoming construction season in the spring, summer.”

Garland said she does not believe construction on the new lifts will cause traffic delays for drivers along Columbus Road.
