6 p.m. – 9 p.m.: Jazz Excursions with Dr. Art Cromwell
Saturday Excursions commemorates the transition of two artists, and the birthdate of a third, all part of subsequent generations of Jazz artists. Collectively they are:
Roy Haynes (d. Nov. 12 at 99), Lou Donaldson (d. Nov. 9 at 98),
and James “Jabbo” Ware (b. Nov. 16 d. Dec. 29, 2022 at 80).
The Transitions: Drummer Roy Haynes was among the last of the drummers who developed a distinct propulsive approach demanded by Bebop’s velocity. Alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson emerged in the Hardbop period, became a prodigious Blue Note records artist, and was involved in the evolution of the tangential Soul Jazz era.
Birthdate Commemoration: James “Jabbo” Ware was among the contingent of Jazz artists who emerged from St. Louis’ Black Artists Group (BAG), alongside Chicago’s AACM, represented a new wave of Midwestern Jazz artists who made significant contributions to NYC’s Loft Jazz period,
