ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The Convo was packed Wednesday night to watch the Ohio Women’s Basketball (1-2) take on the Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0). Coming off their first win of the season against George Washington, the Bobcats had their work cut out for them against the 12th-ranked team in the NCAA. After a hard-fought battle, the Bobcats fell to the Buckeyes 106-42.

With key players like Jaya McClure, Anyssa Jones, and Kennedi Watkins out with injuries, the Bobcats struggled to keep pace with the undefeated Buckeyes, with OSU up 9-0 within the first two minutes. OSU’s Taylor Theirry kicked off the game with a three-point drain for the Buckeyes.

Then, more than halfway through the first, Bailey Tabeling shoots from behind the arc, earning the Bobcats three points of their own. The first quarter was packed with plenty of fouls from both the Bobcats and the Buckeyes, ending the quarter 27-12 OSU.

Early in the second, the Bobcats still struggled to find their footing as the Buckeyes continued to dominate the court. Their strong suits include moving the ball, sinking threes, and Jaloni Cambridge, as she totaled 19 points in the first half alone.

The Buckeyes continued their aggressive defense throughout the second quarter, at times double-teaming players like Ohio’s Gigi Bower and Aliah McWhorter, preventing nearly any movement from inside the paint.

Ohio State more than doubled its lead before the half, ending with the Buckeyes leading 59-19.

Ohio returned to the court in the third quarter with what seemed to be a new fire, with Tabeling leading the Bobcats in points and rebounds. However, Ohio State seemed unphased by Ohio’s advances, as they replied with another 31 points to end the third. Moving the score to 90-38.

Similar to the first half, both teams continued to be physical with players like OSU’s Madison Green receiving her third personal foul for sending an Ohio player sliding across the hardwood.

Still, in a towering 50-point lead, the Buckeyes refused to pump the breaks, moving the ball past Bobcat defenders with ease, while Ohio struggled with shooting behind the arc as well as keeping the OSU offense out of the paint.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, their efforts were insufficient to stop the impressive OSU women’s basketball team. Regarding what is next for the Bobcats, Ohio Head Coach Bob Bolden says, “The biggest thing is that there is room for improvement.”

Ohio hits the road on Nov. 24 to redeem itself against Wright State (1-3).

Ohio State will host Bowling Green (2-3) at the Schottenstein Center looking to keep its winning streak alive on Nov. 24.
