The Spartans opened conference play coming off a 59-53 loss to Federal Hocking.
“They play a run and gun game,” said head coach Morgan Grinstead. “We couldn’t keep up.”
On Thursday night, the Spartans looked to avenge that loss against the Lancers. Their first conference test would be the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets.
The Spartans got things started right from the opening tip. McKenna Moore won the tip-off, leading to a Kaylee Hudnall layup. The Spartans were just getting started from here.
Alexander’s full-court press was suffocating for Wellston. Their defense quickly turned into offense on the other end. Alexander led 16-0 going into the first timeout of the first quarter.
The Spartans led 19-3 after the first quarter. Lily Ryder had an early six points, and Hudnall added five assists.
Alexander continued to dominate in the second quarter. They had a massive 42-point lead after the first half. Ryder led the way with 12 points, while McKenna Moore followed with eleven. Hudnall had seven assists and four steals.
With a running clock, the Spartans finished up the contest with a 56-14 victory and moved into the conference win column.
“We forced a lot of turnovers,” said Grinstead. “We pressured the ball well, which is what we wanted. We wanted to make the tempo of the game fast, steals and run-out layups is what we wanted.”
Ryder, Moore, and Kayden Bean each finished with double digit points on the night. Hudnall finished with nine assists and five steals.
The Spartans look ahead to Vinton County on Tuesday, while Wellston heads to Miller for a non-conference matchup on Monday.
