WATERFORD, Ohio (WOUB)- The Waterford Wildcats’ (16-1, 8-0) starting five, led by Brynnlee Pottmeyer’s 16 points, propelled the Wildcats to a 32-point victory over TVC-Hocking rival Trimble Tomcats (9-6, 3-4). Waterford’s impressive defensive performance recorded nine blocks and nine steals to shut down Trimble’s offense, which the Tomcats have found success with over 40 points scored per game in their last three games.

This is the squads’ second meeting of the season with the Wildcats taking the first match, 49-12. However, Trimble entered tonight with a three-game win streak and looked to avenge their previous loss to Waterford.

Senior Kendall Sury scored the game’s first points on her layup. Sury’s layup totaled her 1000th career point, stopping the game momentarily for photographers to capture Sury and her family’s celebration.

“It means a lot to finally get it. All the years I’ve worked so hard to get to this point. It feels good to soak it all in tonight and realized how much I’ve had to endure to get to here,” Sury said.

The Wildcats used the momentum from the historic moment to generate a 15-0 scoring run to begin the game, which Waterford would finish the quarter with a 20-4 lead. Pottmeyer scored eight points; meanwhile, Sury scored five points.

Waterford extended their lead with another 12-0 scoring run in the second quarter to enter the locker rooms at 39-6, shooting 15/26 in the first half as a team.

With the lengthy lead in the second half, Waterford slowed down their tempo with the running clock at their advantage. Head Coach Jerry Close expressed his joy for the young backups receiving an opportunity to play varsity time.

“That’s a tribute to the seniors playing hard when they are on the floor, getting it so we can get the younger kids some time too. That’s your plan for every game but it doesn’t always work out. It was really nice to see that this evening,” Close said.

Waterford will face Fort Frye (13-2, 4-2) in a non-league game this upcoming Monday at 6 p.m. A rivalry where the schools are only 1.5 miles apart.

Trimble will face cross-division foe Meigs Marauders (1-11, 0-7) this Saturday at Noon.
