ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The executive order Tuesday that said certain state employees must return to working at the office does not apply to Ohio University.

This is according to an Ohio University spokesperson who noted in an email that “universities are not categorized as state agencies.”

Gov. Mike DeWine’s order applies to employees of “state agencies, boards, and commissions” who have been working remotely.

State employees who are affected by the order and are working primarily from home have until March 17 to return to the office.

DeWine said exceptions include employees whose office space that was leased no longer exists, so those situations will be handled case-by-case. He said department and agency leaders should get as many workers back to the office as possible with this caveat:

“Unless there is some urgent reason why they need to continue to work remotely or something unique about the job or that individual,” DeWine said.

DeWine said requiring employees to work at the office will maximize the use of office spaces owned or leased by the state.
