WOUB Senior Spotlight: Jack Greene
< < Back toBy: Sofia Osio
ATHENS, OH– Jack Greene, a journalism news and information major with a minor in political science from Newport, KY, is headed to Cincinnati after graduation this May. He has accepted a job as a news producer with WLWT TV.
Greene knew he had an interest in news since high school and found out through extensive research that the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism was one of the best in the nation. Once Greene took a tour of the Ohio University campus, he knew it was the place for him.
“I immediately fell in love with the city, the campus and the people,” Greene said.
Once he arrived in Athens, Greene quickly got involved with activities on campus that would help him achieve his goals. He soon found a home in WOUB Public Media’s newsroom. Greene has worked at WOUB all four years of his college career and is now the NewsWatch Supervising Producer. The Supervising Producer is an executive student leadership role that allows him to assist other students in learning producing skills and fill positions for the nightly TV newscast.
“I think the best part of this role is watching younger students succeed and cover stories that are not only well done but are also impactful for our viewers,” said Greene. “I came to WOUB to learn more about the broadcast news industry, and it was the perfect place for me to learn all the ins and outs.”
During his time at WOUB Greene enjoyed connecting with the people around him, whether it was for a story or just spending time with his friends in the newsroom.
“I think some of the best moments of my college career were truly any chance I got to cover a story, whether it was as a producer or reporter,” said Greene. “Nothing beats the late nights in the newsroom either. Being surrounded by people who not only are hard-working themselves but want the best for you is so amazing.”
As Greene moves towards the next step in his career, he has a word of advice for those who are just starting out.
“Stick with it. WOUB and college, as a whole, are about what you put into it. If you give 50%, you will get 50% back,” Greene said. “I came into WOUB not knowing one thing about broadcast journalism, now four years later, not only do I know a lot, but I have a job in a place that I love. I like to think it’s because I gave my all to WOUB and tried to learn as much as I could while here.”
