ATHENS, OH – Alex Michalec, a journalism news & information major from Westerville, Ohio, is ready to start a career in digital media after he graduates this May, preferably near the east coast. Even though Ohio University wasn’t Michalec’s first choice for college, he now calls his decision to come to Athens “easily the best decision of his life.”
“I wasn’t supposed to go here,” Michalec said. “My top three schools were the University of Missouri, IUPUI and the University of Kentucky.”
However, after a recommendation from his school advisor to visit Athens, Michalec’s decided to come to Ohio University.
“I wouldn’t change a thing,” Michalec said. “It has brought me my lifelong friends and given me experiences I wouldn’t even dream of. I’ll be a Bobcat forever.”
Once on campus, Michalec fully immersed himself in learning sports media and began his journey at WOUB Public Media.
“I came to WOUB for sports media experience but found much more,” Michalec said. “Being part of WOUB is feeling like you are contributing to something bigger than yourself.”
Throughout his four years with WOUB, Michalec has held many titles, such as producer and social media manager for SportsBeat, digital and social media director for Gridiron Glory, and reporter for Bobcat Sports Showcase and Hardwood Heroes.
Michalec’s dedication to sports media has led to many memorable opportunities and experiences including covering several high profile sporting events and receiving the Dan Lowe Memorial Sports Journalism Scholarship from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. The award is named in honor of Dan Lowe, who was often called Ohio University’s Number 1 fan. The 2003 Scripps School graduate was the first member of the Ozone, and when he graduated his passion as an OU fan turned into a profession of promoting Ohio Sports.
As Michalec looks toward the future, he urges new students to take chances and embrace new opportunities, reminding students that “college is only four years, but college is only four years.”
“Take advantage of every opportunity you get and take risks. I had minimal social media experience when I applied for the role of digital and social media director of Gridiron Glory, but I knew I wanted to get into social media. That one decision has given me opportunities I couldn’t dream of,” Michalec said.
