WOUB Senior Spotlight: Reese Thompson
< < Back toATHENS, OH– Reese Thompson, a journalism news and information major, calls her decision to attend Ohio University the “best decision of my life,” and now looks forward to what’s next after she graduates this May.
Originally from Gahanna, Ohio, Thompson came to Ohio University as a third-generation Bobcat with a penchant for journalism.
“I chose Ohio University because it is known to be one of the best journalism schools in the country,” said Thompson. “I found my love for broadcast journalism in my high school TV class. The teacher of that class was an Ohio University graduate and that’s how I found out about this great program and how it’s left an everlasting impact on his life and career.”
Through WOUB, Thompson worked on Gridiron Glory, Hardwood Heroes, and The Bobcat Sports Showcase as an on-air reporter. Now, she primarily works on WOUB’s nightly half-hour TV news program, NewsWatch where she anchors the live newscasts, sets up interviews with local newsmakers, pitches stories, and creates news packages.
Thompson’s passion for journalism has led her to some unforgettable experiences, including an internship covering the federal government during an election year as part of the Scripps Semester in DC program. She was also part of the WOUB Summer Internship Program and worked as a reporter covering the “cops and courts” beat.
But the relationships and friendships Thompson built during her time in Athens are among her most cherished memories. She treasures the Sunday night dinners she had with fellow WOUB seniors and having her high school broadcast teacher come to campus and watch her anchor NewsWatch.
After graduation, Thompson hopes to find a job that allows her to travel a bit before starting work at a local news station. “I love exploring different cultures and nature,” she said.
“I truly believe there is no other college out there like Ohio University,” said Thompson. “The amount of hands-on training opportunities WOUB has given me cannot be beat.”
