The vote was unanimous and took place at a special board meeting Thursday afternoon. Only three members of the board were present: Gary Arnold, Kayla Simons and John Standley.

The levy is a 1% earned income tax over five years. Putting the tax in perspective, someone earning a $50,000 salary would pay $500 for the year. The tax only affects earned incomes, meaning retirees on fixed incomes will not have to pay.

According to the resolution, the levy would generate about $665,000 for the school district annually if passed. It would go into effect Jan. 1, 2026.

The proposal comes as the school district faces a projected deficit of $11 million by 2029, placing Trimble under fiscal emergency and giving a state commission oversight over the district’s finances.

As it stands, the levy is not yet headed to the ballot. It still must be approved by the state commission at their meeting on July 30, where it is expected to be approved.

“We do not anticipate any problem with the commission,” said Bob Hancock, who filled in as treasurer for the meeting. “They are pleased to see that things are going in this type of direction.”
