ALBANY, Ohio (WOUB) — The Alexander Spartans took on The West Union Dragons in a quarter final matchup for the sectional tournament

At the beginning of the first set, nerves were running high as both teams traded mistakes, keeping the score close at five to five. Then Alexander’s Meena Juedes came out swinging, recording three massive kills that rallied the Spartans’ crowd. From there, the Dragons were smothered and couldn’t find an answer as Alexander went on a six-point run led by Lila Moser to make it seventeen to seven. The Spartans closed out the set twenty-five to nine with all momentum on their side.

The second set started just as the first one ended, with Juedes and Moser dominating the net and slamming kills to extinguish any spark West Union had. The Spartans charged ahead on an 11 point run behind the serving of Abbi Ohms to make it fourteen to two. Alexander continued to roll as Maddy Penrod added to the offensive attack led by Juedes and Moser. The Spartans cruised through the second set, winning twenty-five to seven. 

The Dragons looked for a comeback in the third set, as Shelbi Weakley reignited West Union’s fire with a powerful kill after a long rally. But the momentum didn’t last. Juedes went on a 12 point service run to make it eighteen to three, sealing the Dragons’ fate. Alexander shut the lights out on West Union, giving the Spartan seniors one final home victory. 

Meena Juedes talked about her thoughts going into her final stretch of senior season. “It’s going to be a big change after volleyball, but I’m trying to soak it all in at the moment.” 

The season is over for the West Union Dragons, while the Alexander Spartans move on to face the Westfall Mustangs at 7:45 p.m. on 10/22.
