Vinton County routs Wellston 62-17

McARTHUR, Ohio (WOUB) — The Wellston Lady Golden Rockets (1-16, 0-9) travelled to face the Vinton County Lady Vikings (12-6, 7-2) in a TVC-Ohio showdown where the Lady Vikings would have a decisive victory 62-17.
In their first encounter in January, Vinton County took the victory on the road. Wellston looked to not only get revenge, but to also get their first conference win of the year. For the Lady Vikings, they looked to continue their momentum and stay in the conference title race.
Early in the first quarter, it was a defensive battle as both teams were deadlocked.
But Vinton County would pull away with an eleven-point lead at the end thanks to smooth offensive play and taking advantage of steals, as they led 17-6 after one.
From that point on, the Lady Vikings didn’t look back because their defense got more aggressive, and their shooting got sharper. Emma Leaming and Nora Martin both led the first half scoring with nine as Vinton County’s advantage would grow to a 39-11 lead.
In the second half, it was more of the same with the defense getting even stronger as time went by, forcing more turnovers. The offense kept paced, continuing to take advantage of those turnovers, knocking down shots to further increase the deficit.
When it was all said and done, Vinton County cruised to a 62-17 win.
Leaming was the Lady Vikings’ leading scorer with 13. She was helped by Kylie Smith and Zoie Nichols, who both had eleven, and Martin, who had ten.
But what put Vinton County over the edge was the defense as they put up another dominant performance, forcing 27 turnovers on the afternoon.
The Wellston Golden Lady Rockets fall to 1-17 overall and 0-10 in conference, they look to bounce back against Alexander.
The Vinton County Vikings improve to 13-6 overall and 8-2 in conference, they look to continue their momentum against Logan Elm.
