The Golden Eagles take second place in the conference with a strong win over the Wildcats

BELPRE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Waterford Wildcats (11-9) traveled to Belpre on Friday night to face the Belpre Golden Eagles (9-9) with conference positioning on the line.
Waterford entered the game at 6-3 in conference play, sitting second in the standings. Belpre was one game back at 5-3, holding third place.
Belpre set the tone early with intense defense and a strong inside presence, jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter. Malakai Ensor consistently attacked the rim, helping the Golden Eagles build a 16-9 advantage by the end of the quarter. Waterford struggled to find offensive rhythm against Belpre’s pressure but closed the period with a brief run.
The Golden Eagles continued their physical play in the second quarter, earning frequent trips to the free-throw line. Waterford responded by finding its shooting touch. After several tough baskets and two three-pointers from Reese Lang, the Wildcats cut the deficit to 28-21 at halftime.
Defense dominated the third quarter as both teams limited scoring opportunities. Malik Currie knocked down two key three-pointers to help Belpre extend its lead to 39-32 entering the fourth.
Both teams found offensive momentum in the final quarter, trading baskets throughout. Belpre maintained its composure and shot selection to protect the lead. Weston Fairchild came up with a steal and a layup to bring Waterford within striking distance late.
Once Waterford began fouling intentionally, Belpre capitalized at the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles converted nearly every attempt down the stretch to secure a 54-49 victory and move into second place in the conference standings.
Belpre will look to continue this hot streak against Monroe Central on Feb. 15. For Waterford, they are looking to bounce back against Warren on Monday in their final game of the regular season.
