LEESBURG, Ohio (WOUB) — The Federal Hocking Lancers began their tournament run almost two hours away against the Fairfield Lions. Traveling to face the three seed, the Lancers had an uphill battle to keep their season alive. Despite their best efforts, Federal Hocking’s season ended at the hands of Fairfield 78-51.
The first quarter was an offensive explosion for the Fairfield Lions. The Lions facilitated the ball with unseen speed and efficiency beyond the arc. Fairfield found open guys behind the three-point line and converted on six of their 10 three-point attempts in the first quarter.
Caleb Rice grabbed 13 points in the first four and a half minutes for the Lions. Fairfield ended the first quarter with a 28-12 lead.
The second quarter was a much different story, the Lions’ three-point shooting went cold, and the Lancers shots started to heat up. Cam Joy’s nine points in the second quarter were more than Fairfield’s total in the period.
That combined with phenomenal rim protecting from Federal Hocking allowed the Lancers to crawl back, cutting the lead to seven to end the half.
The third quarter saw Fairfield’s cold streak behind the arc continued. Despite this, the Lions kept the Lancers at bay because of Quentin McIntosh waking up on the offensive end. He grabbed eight points in the third quarter, all in transition near the paint.
This combined with the Lions continuing to grab steal, limiting the Lancers’ shots allowed them to extend the lead.
Once the fourth quarter came around, Fairfield put their foot on the gas. Brody Smith’s 12 points in the first quarter helped the Lions run away with the game. Joy’s 30 points for Federal Hocking was not enough as their season comes to an end.
After a long season of highs and lows, Federal Hocking ends their season with a 4-18 record. Fairfield continues their tournament run in the District Semi-Final against South Webster on March 3.
