Eastern Michigan Holds On, Beats Ohio, 5-4

The Ohio Bobcats' baseball team lost the second game of a three-game road series with Eastern Michigan on Saturday, 5-4.
The game started off very poorly for the Bobcats. In the first inning, Ohio’s starting pitcher Marck Paliotto allowed three hits and three runs, walked two, and threw three wild pitches.
The game was still 3-0 after two scoreless innings for both teams, but in the fourth Tyler Wells got Ohio’s first hit of the game with a solo home run.
In the bottom of the fourth, EMU’s Jamie Simpson had an infield single, but reached second base on a throwing error by Ohio third baseman Ben Otto. Then Simpson stole third and scored on an RBI groundout by Austin Williams.
In the fifth, EMU’s John Rubino led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error by Ohio shortstop Dan Schmidt. Rubino would eventually score to make it 5-1.
Paliotto was pulled after the fifth inning, finishing allowing six hits, five runs — four earned — and striking out six.
Ohio scored in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Jake Madsen to make it 5-2.
Madsen also pitched in relief for the Bobcats, going two innings and only allowing one hit.
Ohio scored in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Dan Schmidt. But the Bobcats had the bases loaded with one out and catcher Cody Gaertner grounded into an inning-ending double play.
In the ninth inning, Schmidt led off for the Bobcats with a double. Nate Squires and Alex Corna each followed with a strike out. Ben Otto hit a two-out double to score Schmidt and make it 5-4. But Gaertner grounded out to end the game.
Otto finished the game hitting 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI and two walks.
Eastern Michigan (11-14, 1-1 MAC) starting pitcher Brian Hill got the win, going 6.1 innings allowing five hits and three runs.
Kristian Calibuso got the save for the Eagles, getting the three outs in the ninth.
The Bobcats (5-20, 2-3 MAC) wrap up the series with the Eagles (11-14, 1-1 MAC) Sunday at 1 p.m.
