Region’s Heritage Celebrated In “Music Of The Little Cities”
< < Back to regions-heritage-celebrated-music-little-citiesSoutheast Ohio's history, heritage and natural environment will be celebrated this Friday with "Music of the Little Cities: Coal Dust, Culture and Cause for Congregation," hosted by Stuart's Opera House and co-sponored by The Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council and the Historic Downtown Nelsonville Association.
Now in its 11th year, the event spotlights the former Hocking Valley Coal region with musical performances, storytelling and exhibits.
Headlining for the second year in a row will be singer-songwriter Adam Remnant, an Athens resident whose work with the band Southeast Engine has received national acclaim. Several of Remnant's songs are set in the Little Cities region, particularly tracks from Southeast Engine's 2011 album Canary, which focused on a family living in Southeast Ohio during the Great Depression.
Other acts include Ohio's longest-running community music ensemble, the Aldelphi Community Band; Athens County folk singer and filmmaker Jack Wright; and the Nelsonville Presbyterian Church Choir under the direction of Megan Cameron.
Storytelling, an important part of the region's heritage, will be told via living history characters such as Stuart's Opera House founder George Stuart, portrayed by area resident Bob Garbo. The presentation will also feature musical interludes by vocalist Sharrell Andrews Arocho and violinist Tiffany Rowland. The storytelling show is produced by Athens area theater specialist Kathy Devecka, who will also provide dramatic narration during the performance.
Music of the Little Cities, an exhibit featuring photographs and artifacts highlighting the role of music in the early coal towns of Athens, Hocking, Perry and Morgan Counties, will be on display in the Stuart's Opera House lobby.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Food will be available, with performances getting underway at 7:30 p.m. Visit www.stuartsoperahouse.org for more information.
