< < Back to abreu-pleads-guilty-drug-trafficking-future-jeopardyFormer Akron point guard Alex Abreu pleaded guilty Monday afternoon to drug charges related to an early March arrest. His future with the school remains up in the air.
Abreu was arrested on March 7 during the last week of Akron's basketball season after allegedly accepting a package containing five pounds of marijuana at a location off campus.
Monday Abreu pleaded guilty to one count of drug trafficking, a third-degree felony, and was given a two-year suspended prison sentence. He was also placed on probation for 18 months, and his drivers license was suspended for six months, retroactive to his arrest.
The Zips issued a statement Monday saying they will review Abreu's suspension at a later time.
"Akron junior guard Alex Abreu remains suspended indefinitely from the men's basketball team following today's verdict," the statement said. "Both the University of Akron and the department of athletics will review his case and will determine his status at a later date."
Abreu played a key role as the starting point guard for the Zips last season, which recorded the nation's longest winning streak (19 games) and cracekd the Top 25 of the USA Today Coaches Poll for the first time in school history. He averaged 10.3 points and 6.0 assists per game during his junior season before being suspended indefinitely on March 7.
The Zips have won at least 20 games in each of the past eight seasons, and Abreu could be an imporant piece in making 2013-14 the ninth.
Akron loses senior center and MAC career blocks leader Zeke Marshall, but has reinstated 2011-12 fourth-leading scorer Quincy Diggs.
Diggs sat out the 2012-13 season after violating Akron's code of student conduct.
