Quick Hits: Takeaways From MAC Media Day

Ohio Football participated in the 2013 MAC Media Day at Ford Field on Tuesday, offering insights and previewing the upcoming season. Here are some quick hits from Media Day: 

  • The ‘Cats open up their season Week 1 on the road against the highly-touted Louisville Cardinals and their quarterback and Heisman favorite Teddy Bridgewater. Solich says the game will be a challenge, but one that his team will be ready to accept. He added that his team is confident, but understands how big of an undertaking it will be to go up against a quarterback of Bridgewater’s caliber in week one.
  • Commenting on the injuries that plagued the ‘Cats last season Solid said, “We were a team that thought we had excellent depth, but that depth got wiped out by injuries.” Heading into the 2013 season however, Solich said that the depth created by younger players being forced into starting roles will allow them to keep players better rested and have deeper rotations.
  • The offensive line lost three starters to graduation at the end of the 2012 season, but Solich said he isn’t concerned about replacing them. Despite replacing several key members of a line that led Ohio running backs to a team record 1,604 yards this past season, the head coach expects the young guys to fill in and allow them to compete at the same level as before.
  • Solich said he is seeing the best level of talent around the MAC that he’s ever seen; adding that he has more potential NFL caliber players on his roster than ever before. Solich said the increased talent level at Ohio, and throughout the MAC, is also helping in the recruiting game, leading to even more possible future professional players on his roster.
  • The linebacker core is one of the more mysterious groups on the roster. Only redshirt senior Keith Moore is set in stone as a starter, Solich said. But the coach added he thinks the group of players competing for the other two linebacker positions is the fastest core of linebackers he’s had at Ohio. He said that despite the lack of experience the linebacker core could become a real strength for the team.
