Ohio Powers Way to Win Over Kent
< < Back to ohio-powers-way-to-win-over-kentAfter scoring five runs in ninth inning for a win Friday night, the Bobcats used another lopsided inning on Saturday to claim an 11-4 road victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes and a tie for second place in the Mid-American Conference East.
Tied up at 3-3 though six innings, Ohio (22-14, 8-6) put up seven in the seventh frame to take the game out of reach for Kent State (20-15, 8-6).
The ‘Cats worked the bases loaded with no outs and took their first lead at 4-3 when Cody Gaernter was hit by a pitch. A single from John Adryan and a throwing error to first base brought in two more Bobcat runs on individual scoring plays.
Ty Black’s sacrifice fly to center was the first out of the inning, but brought in the fourth run of the inning and the Bobcats’ seventh of the game.
Manny DeJesus brought in run number eight with an RBI single, and then he influenced another scoring play with his speed. DeJesus stole second, and forced a bad throw into the outfield to score Tyler Wells.
Garrett Black led off the inning with a single to start the party, and he capped it off with another single to set the score at 10-3.
After the Golden Flashes added a run in the bottom of the seventh, Wells put the deficit back at seven with a single that gave him four RBIs on the day. The Bobcats’ outfielder plated two in the fourth inning with another single, and drove in a run in the sixth with a double to right field.
The slugger’s three hits were matched by Garret Black. Mitch Longo record two hits, as did Cody Gaertner, who also scored four times for the Bobcats.
Despite 11 runs scored, Kent State pitchers were only charged with five earned runs due to three Golden Flash errors.
Logan Jacik got the win for Ohio for his two innings of work in the sixth and seventh, but the ‘Cats got a solid start out of Connor Sitz. The righty went five innings and allowed three runs – two earned – on seven hits.
With two wins over their division rival, the Bobcats are gunning for a series sweep on the road on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Schoonover Stadium.
