Jackie O’s Introduces Space-Themed Brew
< < Back to jackie-os-premieres-space-themed-brewRepresentatives from the International Space University’s (ISU) 2015 Space Studies Program (SSP15), Ohio University and Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery tapped the first keg of a commemorative seasonal beer Monday night that the Athens brewery created in honor of SSP15, which OU is hosting June 8-Aug. 7.
The red rye IPA dubbed “Rye of Jupiter,” which was brewed with Galaxy and Equinox hops to stick with the space theme, represents one of the many community partnerships that have formed to support and welcome SSP15’s more than 110 participants – and 150 more faculty members – who have traveled to Athens from 30 countries.
“When we first heard about ISU coming to Athens, our staff jumped at the chance to get involved,” Jackie O’s owner Art Oestrike said. “We’re always looking for fun, new ways to collaborate on creative recipes, and Rye of Jupiter gave us the opportunity to do just that, while welcoming this awesome group of guests to Athens.”
SSP15 Director John Connolly, Russ College of Engineering and Technology Dean Dennis Irwin and Jackie O’s Pub Brewer Clark Benson raised a ceremonial “first pour” at the start of SSP15’s opening ceremony reception.
“With every SSP, there are usually many community partnerships from the host city, but I can safely say that the partnership we’re most excited for is that with Jackie O’s Brewery,” Connolly said to applause from the audience.
Rye of Jupiter will be available at Jackie O’s Brewpub while supplies last. Benson, who developed the recipe, said the experience rekindled his own love of all things space.
“Ever since I went to space camp as a kid, space has been one of my passions,” Benson explained. “Brewing this beer has really given me a chance to bring my career as an adult full circle back to that childhood passion.”
As for the taste, Irwin said Rye of Jupiter fits in perfectly with SSP15’s informal motto.
“Wow – this definitely ‘increases the awesome!’”
