< < Back to ohio-university-commemorates-march-washington-anniversaryWednesday marked fifty years since the March on Washington for jobs and freedom. Ohio University hosted a commemorative event at Memorial Auditorium Wednesday evening in honor of this monumental anniversary.
The night was filled with emotion and pride from speakers and audience members alike. The house was packed with a diverse range of students, faculty and Athens community members who all share in their support and pride for the dream of equality for all men and women.
Local leaders who marched in this movement fifty years ago engaged the audience with their enthusiasm, and dedication to this cause. This includes Francine Childs, professor in the Department of African American Studies who has personally met the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Many of the speakers were women residents of Athens County who offered solutions to inequality problems that still exist in the modern day. The audience was engaged with a narration, photographs, and footage from the March on Washington and the immortal, “I Have a Dream” speech.
