Ohio’s 1804 Fund Helps Finance Research and Community Initiatives

Ohio University’s 1804 Fund has announced it will be funding 15 new initiatives for academic year 2013 for a total of $480,950.
The fund has been administered to “foster innovation and collaboration across disciplines,” the Foundation Board states.
“The fund supports projects that focus on excellence in undergraduate education, faculty research and graduate studies and supports the University’s core mission of ‘maintaining, strengthening, and enhancing a learning-centered community.”
This year $265,475 will be spent for faculty research and graduate student research projects.
Eleven projects for undergraduate learning are also being funded with $215,475.
The top two awards of $75,000 each are going to the sciences.
One grant will fund a project to enhance 3D Imaging Research by acquiring a MicroCT Scanner for use in biomedicine, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, paleontology and engineering.
The second top award will fund the purchase of a Seahorse Bioscience XF Analyzer.
This piece of equipment and its software will help “develop a core facility dedicated to research in cellular metabolism…for three Ohio University institutes,” according to the announcement.
Two other major awards support the performing arts. Over $63,000 will be spent on creating a clinic, Science and Health in Artistic Performance (SHAPe) that will offer healthcare to performing arts students, a laboratory for conducting research and curricula to educate performing arts and healthcare students.
“The injury rate for performing artists is higher than for traditional athletes,” the Board states.
The second performing arts award will create the Stage Automation Technology Lab to provide “cutting-edge stage automation equipment.”
It also establishes a student technology lab for Ohio University’s School of Theater for production, design and technology student and performance students.
Additionally, there are several significant undergraduate awards:
- $40,000 to develop the Office of Student Community engagement
- $18,678 to purchase Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry Equipment for CHEM 4760L
- $32,561 to From Classroom to Community: Building Capacity for Service Learning into the First Year Experience
- $19,968 Advancing Carbon Neutrality: Using the Kanawha Model to Facilitate Climate Change Literacy
- $13,000 Global Health Certificate Online Course Creation for Undergraduate and Graduate Students
- $20,000 The Garden as a Classroom: Cultivating Sustainability Awareness at the West State Street Research Site
- $6,331 Upward Bound Art Program
- $14,208 Peer Led Team Learning in Biological Anthropology
- $17,652 Strengthening War and Peace Studies at Ohio University
The 1804 Fund awards are part of Ohio University’s The Promise Lives Campaign which is expected to raise $450 million by June 2015.
