< < Back to chase-bank-robber-reportedly-caught-illinoisAn Indiana man who reportedly robbed an Athens bank, along with 10 other banks in four different states, has been caught in Illinois.
Ronald E. Corbin, 49, of Lafayette, Ind., was arrested Wednesday by the Urbana, Ill., Police Department after allegedly robbing Urbana Bank, according to an article by the Marietta Times.
Corbin is a suspect in an attempted robbery at Marietta Peoples Bank and bank robberies in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. He was allegedly caught on surveillance camera footage at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank on East State Street in Athens on Aug. 26.
He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money and may have attempted an armed robbery at a bank in Marietta that morning, leaving without any money.
Because of the number of robberies he is suspected to have committed, Corbin faces the possibility of federal charges.
"He's a suspect in four crimes in Southern Ohio alone," said supervisory special agent Eric Thomas, of the Dayton area branch of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "More than likely, if we can charge him with all of the crimes, then it would make much more sense to charge him (federally)."
The FBI is still conducting interviews and gathering evidence before it makes a decision whether to charge him or keep the charges up to local jurisdictions.
"I don't know of any plans to charge him locally," said Athens Police Chief Thomas Pyle. "But that's still up to what the FBI finds."
Corbin was out on bond from Tippecanoe County, Ind., where he was already charged with felony conspiracy to commit robbery while armed, two counts of felony robbery and two counts of theft from an incident that occurred on Oct. 12, 2012, according to court records.
According to Champaign County Jail website, Corbin was booked at the jail Jail officials said he was then released to the Urbana Police Department.
