Ohio Eeks By Cal 1-0
< < Back to ohio-eeks-cal-1-0The Ohio Field Hockey team earned its second win of the season, outlasting California-Berkeley 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Evanston, Ill.
Coming into the game, the Golden Bears posted some solid victories on their resume, including wins over Michigan State and Dartmouth and also took fourth-ranked Connecticut into overtime, which ended in a one-goal loss.
However, it was the Bobcats who held the momentum for the entire contest, outshooting Cal 8-4 and splitting the corners 4-4. Despite this offensive dominance, the Bobcats maintained poise defensively, and junior goalkeeper Brittany Walker garnered her first shutout of the season, manning the pipes for the entire 70 minutes.
The Bobcats were led by freshman Franziska Schmiedel in shots with three, while redshirt junior Lauryl Desch and senior Luli Gomez Teruel both took two shots.
The lone goal of the match came from senior Jessica Jue in the 20th minute. Her first goal of the season came off a rebound after Desch’s shot was blocked.
Cal finally made a scoring push with two penalty corners in the 33rd minute, but this momentum was stymied by two key saves by Walker, allowing the Bobcats to take this 1-0 lead into the half.
The second half began with two more missed corner opportunities for Cal (39’ and 44’) with Walker making one of her three saves in the 40th minute.
After this sequence, the Bobcats countered quickly with a buildup at 45’, but Schmiedel’s shot was turned away by Cal goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson. The final Golden Bear attack of the game occurred in the 51st minute, but the Bears were stymied by Walker for the last time, as they could not muster a shot for the rest of the game.
The Bobcats had an opportunity for an insurance goal in the 68th minute, but Gomez Teruel fired her shot wide of the net.
The Bobcats’ next game is Sunday, Sept. 15, as they will take on No. 12 Northwestern at Lakeside Field in Evanston.
